Great India first opened their doors to Wellington diners in 1983. In Mercer Street, a very successful restaurant with seating capacity of 60 and no tandoor. To compromise for this, they had amazing new curries, which triggered many taste buds. With a long history in hospitality, family owned and operated, head chef Champaklal Tailor and renowned tandoor chef is a true master in the art of baking breads. His wife, Jyotshna Tailor has specialized in the curry section and the tradition has been passed on to their daughter Bhavna. Eldest son, Rakesh enjoys the public relations scene and covers front of house as maitre d'. Harshida, Rakesh's wife who joined Great India in 1998 designed the main course for the "Corbans challenge". Samba Masala (Venison Curry) from Nepal-North India was obviously a hit curry. Great India Restaurant endeavours to be a leader in the art of Indian Cuisine for Wellington, look out for their ads on the back of 40 buses and on billboards at the airport.
